PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT

Motivation:
Is a procedure that starts with a biological or mental vital that activates conduct or a initiative that is planned at an objective (Doman, Gaudiano, n.d). Without motivation an employee will not be able to perform well at work as they will lack enthusiasm for achieving the goals of the business (Bodwin, Allen, O’Toole, Harris and McDonnell,2011).Cresta Group of hotels has what we call employee engagement: This programme has produced results as it led to an enhanced customer focus. The workers are permitted to associate with a recognised hospitality Union which will negotiate for improved living circumstances on their behalf(Cresta annual report,2013).

Because we are saying motivation is a drive that is aimed at a goal.  Is money a motivator for Cresta Group employees in a long term?
Rewards
It is defined as something that upturns the occurrence of a worker action (Kriesman, 2002).
Cresta group have long term achievement program. In which you start getting certificates for a being a long service employees and you get a certain percentage of money added to your salary. It is something commendable but is it not supposed to be the more years you have in a company the better and change in your position of work.
Is the program an effective scheme that can make an employee work for 30 years but you are still a waiter, with no change in your standards of living?
Which are the other ways in which Cresta Group offer rewards to its employees?

Pays continue to be not a motivator. They are treats. Undeniably, pays are a main purpose individual hold jobs, but they are not the main purpose individuals do exceptional good work. Deeprose, (2006) continue that an excellent increase might drive a brief spurt of energized behaviour, but love diminishes as living expenses swell to meet the raise (as they always do). Of course, the dark side of entitlements is that they motivate peak performance lessening them is very discouraging, so covering-up a raise from someone who has every reason to expect one can have a very negative effect on that individual’s motivation. Cresta Hotel have group sporting codes-in which the employees across the hotels interact and play and is believed to impact positively on employee motivation(Cresta annual report,2013).

Cresta Marakanelo Limited annual report, (2012) has alluded that “the management in conjunction with the Human Resources Committee, continuously has got a Performance Appraisal System that is used to reward employees. The results of the appraisal system are also used to as inputs for training on various areas”. This is supported by Obisi,(2011) who defines performance appraisals: as “a process which provide organizations with a means of identifying not only what people’s performance levels but which areas will need improvement. The type they use is open appraisal- in which the appraiser becomes more reflective” (Obisi, 2011). Cresta ChurchHill’s longest serving employee retires. The employee retired after 22 years of service in which he first joined the company as a restaurant waiter but was later promoted as Front office cashier (Cresta Calling, 2014). The position he held till he retired. The package he got which included long service certificate.

Many people have asked the question but the answer is still difficult to say. Deeprose, (2006) indicated that Greek playwright Sophocles wrote in Antigone, ‘‘There is nothing in the world as demoralizing as money.’’ Euripides said in Medea, ‘‘Money is far more persuasive than logical arguments’’ (Deeprose, 2006). Certain up-to-date reliable studies conclude that yes, money is a motivator. But equally reliable studies conclude that no, it is not. These two studies are correct that money can be said is and also not a motivator as this entire narrows down to how someone handles their money (Deeprose, 2006).

Employee of the year, month, Christmas parties, bonuses for the Cresta group.
Nickson, (2007) cited that the total rewards system has been criticized for the usage of total as it neglects a variation of other rewards which may be accessible by the business. For example, in the survey of 20 hotel companies IDS (2005b) found that three quarters provided free meals and staff discounts on rooms, restaurants and shops within the hotel. Twenty per cent presented free use of leisure facilities, plus spas (Nickson, 2007).

  5. Deeprose, (2006) indicates that ‘‘Money is how you keep score.’’ —It was mentioned but lots of people the first was probably H. Wayne Huizenga, billionaire entrepreneur (The New York Times Magazine, December 5, 1993 cited in Deeprose,2006).Individuals are inspired to fulfill a number of different needs, the most basic being the need to get a roof over their heads and food. The most patronizing need possibly is to exceed the ordinary and reach the uppermost level of achievement (Chen, Clarke, 2007).
Motivation, staff retention and rewards lead to a well-organized and effective service which will in turn help business achieve profits and enable growth (Pettinger, 2007).
Further debate has been suggested to find out what really motivates an employee.
